What are Pickleworms?

Pickleworms, scientifically known as Diaphania nitidalis, are notorious pests that have a special fondness for cucurbits such as cucumbers, summer squash, cantaloupe, and pumpkins. These pests are the larvae of a moth and are often identified by their distinctive markings (see photo below). In their larval stage, they can cause significant damage to your plant stems, flower buds, and fruits, making it essential for gardeners to understand how to manage them effectively.

Pickleworms (also known as rindworms) are believed to only over winter in Florida and Texas, and new generations of Pickleworms are pushed northward every year from FL and TX by storms and heavy winds. As a result, the timing of infestations can fluctuate each year, with some years showing little signs of the pest while others show above normal infestations.

How to Kill Pickleworms Using Bacillus Thuringiensis (Bt)

One of the most effective methods to kill pickleworms is through the application of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a naturally occurring bacterium. It is an organic pest control method that is safe for humans and pets. To apply it, mix the product according to the label instructions and spray it directly on the affected plants. Make sure to cover the undersides of leaves where pickleworms often hide. This method ensures that these pesky larvae are effectively killed while also preserving beneficial insects.

By being proactive and using Bacillus thuringiensis, you can keep your cucurbits healthy and minimize the impact of pickleworms in your garden. Remember that consistent monitoring and timely interventions are key to managing these pests successfully!
